What should I expect from my gynecologist appointment?
Dr. Morales begins with a physical exam and review of your medical history. If you’re sexually active, over age 21, or have a specific concern, she may also perform a pelvic exam and Pap test.
Before a pelvic exam, Dr. Morales gives you a few moments of privacy to undress and put on an exam gown. Then, you lie on your back with your legs elevated in footrests so she can examine your vagina.
After checking the outer part of your vulva for signs of disease, she gently inserts a speculum into your vagina and spreads it apart to view your cervix. If you need a Pap test, she swabs the surface of your cervix to collect a small sample of cells. She sends this sample to a laboratory for testing.
The Pap test shouldn’t be painful, but you may feel some mild discomfort and pressure from the speculum. Then, Dr. Morales removes the speculum and manually checks your vagina and pelvic region for lumps or pain.
If you have specific symptoms or concerns, Dr. Morales may perform additional tests, such as an ultrasound.
